Cafecito Counseling offers year-round clinical training for master’s level counseling students seeking practicum or internship placement within a trauma-informed, culturally responsive private practice.
This site is designed for students who value relational work, community engagement, and practicing from an anti-oppressive and liberation-informed lens.

❋ About the Practice
Cafecito Counseling provides in-person and virtual counseling services in English and Spanish to children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Services include individual and family therapy, diagnosis, and assessment.
Populations served include:
Immigrants and undocumented individuals
Clients navigating trauma, anxiety, and grief
Individuals experiencing eating disorders and disordered eating
Clients from diverse racial, cultural, gender, and sexual identities
Interns work within a setting that requires cultural humility, ethical integrity, and strong clinical presence.
❋ Requirements
Applicants must:
Be enrolled in a master’s level counseling program in good academic standing
Commit to two to three consecutive semesters
Maintain some in-person availability
Carry professional liability insurance prior to seeing clients
Demonstrate openness to practicing from a social justice and anti-oppressive lens
Participation in community engagement activities across the Triad may be required
Due to the population we serve, fluency in Spanish is required.
Fluency does not mean perfection. You do not need flawless grammar or accent. If you feel less confident but committed to strengthening your clinical Spanish, you are encouraged to apply. Interviews will be conducted in both English and Spanish to assess conversational and clinical fluency. Growth in language skills is considered part of the training process.
❋ Clinical Responsibilities
Depending on practicum or internship level, students may:
Provide in-person and telehealth counseling in Spanish and English
Conduct intakes and biopsychosocial assessments
Develop treatment plans
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
Apply foundational counseling skills and evidence-based interventions
Participate in psychoeducational workshops and outreach events
Engage in networking and community partnerships
Attend weekly individual supervision and case consultation
❋ Clinical Framework & Values
Interns are expected to practice from an anti-oppressive and culturally responsive lens. This includes working respectfully with clients across documentation status, racial and cultural identities, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
Training engages with:
Health at Every Size® (HAES) principles
Weight-inclusive and trauma-informed care
Feminist, intersectional, and liberation psychology frameworks
Ethical and confidentiality considerations
Openness to learning and applying these frameworks is required.
❋ Professional Development Opportunities
Interns will:
Receive letters of recommendation upon successful completion
Participate in outreach and networking events
Gain exposure to community partnerships
Strengthen readiness for post-graduate clinical work
❋ Stipend
Students may choose:
$1,200 total stipend ($600 per semester), or
Equivalent funding toward professional training of the student’s choice
